At a fintech event: three podiums feeding one wall.

Overview

Everyone writes on their own, and the room sees it together.

People write or draw a Post-it on a touch podium with a pencil, a marker, an eraser, emojis and a choice of colours. When they send it, the note zooms onto a large wall and settles in among everyone else's.

The wall can arrange the notes into a shape, a number, a word or a logo, so the event decides what the finished wall says.

How it plays

Three steps, no instructions needed.

  1. 01WriteDraw or write on the podium. The tools are kept few so anyone can start without being shown how.
  2. 02SendThe note zooms onto the wall straight away, so the room sees someone just added one.
  3. 03Build upOver the day the notes fill the wall and form the shape the event was set up to show.

How it's built

Two apps on two PCs, talking over the local network.

The podium runs a Unity drawing app. When a note is finished, it's turned into an image and sent to the wall PC over the network.

The wall app receives the image, rebuilds it, animates it in and places it in the next free spot of the chosen layout. Every note is also saved on the machine, so the client keeps an archive of the event.

  • Unity (C#)
  • Custom TCP link over Wi-Fi
  • Touch podium
  • Wall display

What was hard

Three things that made it hard.

  1. 01An unreliable networkEvent Wi-Fi drops. The wall must never show a half-received note, and the two PCs have to find each other again when the link comes back.
  2. 02Big images, fastA full-size drawing is a large file. Sent as-is, it arrived slowly and made the wall stutter.
  3. 03Drawing that feels rightStrokes had to be smooth, and the eraser and undo had to keep up with a finger.

Setup

What a stand needs.

  • One or more touch podiums, each with its PC
  • A large display or video wall, with its own PC
  • A local network between them

Bring your own screens and we build for them, or we source and build the hardware as part of the project. Graphics, characters, language and branding are all redone for each client.
