Tic-Tac-Toe Football
Tic-tac-toe, played by kicking a real ball at the wall.
Built for sports venues and brand activations. Two players take turns, and every kick that lands marks a square.
Overview
The wall works out where the ball hit and marks that square.
Players kick a football at a large display showing a 3×3 grid. The screen reads where the ball struck, and the game places that player's X or O in the square it landed on.
Turns switch on their own. Three in a row lights up the winning squares and brings up a victory screen, and the event staff restart it for the next pair.
How it plays
Three steps, no instructions needed.
- 01KickAim for a square and kick. A hit places your mark straight away, with a quick punch of animation.
- 02SwapThe turn passes to the other player without anyone touching a screen.
- 03WinThree in a row glows, the winner gets their screen, and the board resets.
How it's built
A touch frame big enough to take a football.
The display is fitted with an infrared touch frame that reports where it was hit as an x–y position. The game, built in Unity, maps that point onto the grid.
On every hit it checks which square was struck, whether it's free and whose turn it is, then whether the move wins or draws.
- Unity (C#)
- Infrared touch frame
- Large display
What was hard
Three things that made it hard.
- 01Reading a kickA football hits fast. The frame had to report the exact point of a high-speed impact, and tell a real kick from someone brushing the screen.
- 02From sensor to squareThe sensor's coordinates don't match the game's, so the mapping across a screen that size had to be exact.
- 03Kicks near a borderA ball landing between two squares could register twice, or in the wrong square.
Setup
What a stand needs.
- A large display fitted with an infrared touch frame
- One PC running the game
- Space to kick from a few metres back
Bring your own screens and we build for them, or we source and build the hardware as part of the project. Graphics, characters, language and branding are all redone for each client.
